Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has undergone MRI twice in the past four months, said the Health Ministry today.

The ministry's director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said CDs of the MRI images and copies of the MRI reports prepared by Kuala Lumpur Hospital consultant radiologists have also been given to Anwar's family.

"Copies of these reports and CDs of the images have been handed over to Anwar’s family with the former on July 14 and the latter on Sept 21," he said in a statement today.

He was responding to claims made by Anwar's lawyers today that no MRIs have been carried out to ascertain the condition of the PKR de facto leader's shoulder injury.

Noor Hisham said 17 clinical consultants from eight medical disciplines, including seven orthopaedic surgery consultants are treating Anwar.

Four of the consultants he said were external experts, who gave a second opinion on Anwar's condition.

He added another consultant from the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) had also examined Anwar this morning for yet another opinion as requested by Anwar's family.

"A family conference was also subsequently held today involving the patient, family members, the consultant orthopaedic arthroscope and sports surgeon from UMMC (and) HKL and the deputy director of HKL," Noor Hisham said.

Anwar's family had previously threatened to file a malpractice suit against specialist Dr S Jeyaindran for not providing urgent treatment as required, claiming the doctor had delayed treatment.

The former opposition leader is suffering from a shoulder injury sustained prior to his jailing in February which he says requires urgent surgery.

Anwar's family said he is now in constant pain as the injury has worsened while in prison adding that health ministry experts who examined him only prescribed physiotherapy and analgesics.
