The four University Malaya (UM) students who were arrested for their protest in front of Parliament in August have been called in for a 'mandatory' discussion with the university's authorities this Thursday.

One of them, Khairol Najib Hashim posted to social media a letter that was e-mailed by UM to four of them today, asking them to attend the session.

The letter was signed by the deputy vice-Chancellor (student affairs & alumni) Dr Rohana Yusof. It also said the four would face a disciplinary action if they failed to show up.

"We are shocked because the usual SOP (standard operating procedure) is to send a show-cause letter and then a hearing. There has never been a 'discussion' before," Khairol told Malaysiakini .

The other three UM students who received the letter were Ammar Atan, Teoh Ann Siang and Sharafi Ilman.

Khairol said they will make an announcement whether they would attend the session as one of them is attending practicum out of Kuala Lumpur.

The four were among 16 students -13 males and three females – who were arrested after a standoff with police outside Parliamen on Aug 25 after camping for two days there.

The students were demanding recognition of student powers and activism and had also issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to discuss the current issues confronting the nation with them.

Rohana, when contacted, confirmed Thursday's session will be used as a counselling session for the four students by the university adminstration.
