Toshiba Reaffirms Commitment in Southeast Asia and Malaysia
· To invest US$1 billion over next five years, aims to double current sales in ASEAN
· In Malaysia, Toshiba aims to strengthen its presence in areas such as energy, healthcare and building solutions.
January 22, 2015--Toshiba Corporation announced today about Toshiba Group business strategy in ASEAN, and its involvement in Malaysia.
Mr. Fumio Otani, Corporate Vice President & Corporate Representative–Asia for Toshiba Corporation and Managing Director of Singapore-based Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., mentioned that Toshiba aims to invest US$1 billion in Southeast Asia over the next five years, and looks to double current sales in the region to US$7 billion in the same period.
Malaysia aims to transform itself by 2020 and healthcare has been identified as one of the priority areas. In December 2014, Toshiba announced that Toshiba Medical Systems Manufacturing Asia Sdn. Bhd (TMMA), located in Penang, started operations to manufacture Malaysia’s first diagnostic ultrasound systems. In addition, Toshiba is enhancing its capabilities by establishing a sales subsidiary - Toshiba Medical Systems Malaysia Sdn. Bhd in June 2014 to cater to the country’s aim to promote medical tourism. In 2013, Toshiba Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the introduction to Malaysia of Toshiba's carbon ion radiotherapy system - a tool in the battle against cancer.
Apart from healthcare, Toshiba has been a contributor to Malaysia’s energy supply. As the country continues to grow, an efficient energy generation and distribution is essential. Toshiba has been involved in Malaysia’s power generation industry from thermal and hydropower to transmission & distribution equipment. In August 2014, Toshiba won an EPC Contract for a 2,000MW ultra-super-critical coal-fired power generation project as a member of a consortium. The site is located at Mukim Jimah in Negeri Sembilan. As Sarawak has large hydropower resources that are being developed as part of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems Asia Sdn. Bhd has also been supplying transmission & distribution technologies to support a constant supply of power and prevent major blackouts.
Mr. Kenji Yoshida, Managing Director, TOS Energy Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., underlined how his company is reinforcing Toshiba’s capabilities in Malaysia in infrastructure to its business portfolio, allowing Toshiba to offer customers a one-stop solution in key business segments and in products ranging from power plants to industrial products such as motors and drives.
Toshiba is also to contribute to energy-efficient building solutions in areas of air-conditioners, elevators and lighting. With Toshiba’s elevators achieving a no. 1 market share in Malaysia, Toshiba strengthened its presence in June 2014 this year with TELC Engineering Center (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corporation, which will provide engineering support in markets in Southeast Asia, India and the Middle East.
Toshiba has been doing business in Malaysia since 1968, initially in consumer electronics which is now represented by Toshiba Sales and Services Sdn Bhd.
In summing up his remarks, Mr. Otani reiterated Toshiba’s vision of creating a “safe, secure and comfortable society, the Human Smart Community, by lifenology, the technologies necessary for life.” The company will continue to provide technologies, products and solutions that contribute to a stable energy supply, leading healthcare technologies, and environmentally-friendly building solutions.
