Malaysiakini editors and veteran journalists will give some media insights on how to avoid bad press and enhance an organisation’s image by facing the media through better public relations.

To be held tomorrow (Thursday, 2/7/15) and Friday this HRDF claimmable course will be a fun filled interactive workshop with role plays, mock press conferences, group press release writing exercises, video clips, energisers and more hands on activities.

M.Krishnamoorthy, coordinator for the workshop said: “The editors and other speakers will give tips on what PROs did not learn in universities. They can gain better and practical insights in media relations from the veteran journalists and editors. We will also coach the participants on how to write effective and newsworthy press releases that will get published.”

The media, Krishnamoorthy said, has a role to play in informing the public and if a company’s media release does not interest the editor, the story may not get published.

His  ' Facing the Media' session will cover a wide range of topics about media relations as Krishnamoorthy has been a journalist for the past 35 years. Formerly with The Star , he is currently freelancing for international television stations and with the local media.

Malaysiakini ’s founding editor Steven Gan said: “Editors are on the lookout for good news stories and news breaking statements that tell an exciting and interesting story to Malaysiakini’s readers. Our aim is to always have two sides of the story and for this reason organisations need to be proactive in giving their side of the story so we have a balanced news story.”

Premesh Chandran, Malaysiakini 's CEO said: "Through the workshop we are trying to reach out to tell leaders that we are here to publish the truth and that we are always prepared to tell your side of the story."

The other speakers are a Malaysian columnist and public relations consultant, as well as KINIBIZ founding editor P.Gunasegaram.

The first workshop was organized by Campuskini about a month ago, on 'Facing the Media'. Several participants commended the workshop as being practical, enlightening and useful in their profession as public relations consultants.

“The workshop provided an excellent platform for the sharing of minds and methodologies,” said Ghazalie Abdullah, Chief Strategist and founder of GRA Communications.

On the comprehensive 'Navigating Crisis' topic, he said: “Crises come in different shapes and sizes and we discovered that different approaches are needed to bring about the required resolution.  A great course to attend.”

Azura Daud, Head of PR & Communications at Petrosains said: “I have learnt many new things and explored other people's perspectives on how things are done.”
