ShopBack: Malaysian Shoppers Spent Over RM 1M On Cooling Items In Past Two Months
According to' Gil Carmo, the Country Head of online Cashback site ShopBack Malaysia, Malaysians shoppers has bought more than RM1million worth of cooling items from its popular online marketplace merchants – Lazada, Taobao, Qoo10 – over the past two months. Comparing to the gross merchandise volume (GMV) for the same category of items in the month of January and February combined, the two-month ongoing dry spell has brought almost 100% increase in sales.
The list of identified cooling items includes: wall mounted and standing air-conditioners, full-size air circulator, standing fan and USB fan, disposable wipes, cooling patches, as well as light wear apparels.
Running on the concept of rewarding consumers with hard cash instead of credits whenever they shop online, Cashback site has been utilised as an online saving tool among western countries. The concept is being picked up fast in Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, India and Indonesia, thanks to the rapid development of e-commerce industry in Southeast Asia.
The tough weather condition has led to rising cost of living due to higher electricity usage and insufficient vegetable production. Additional spending on heatwave related items is inevitable, prompting consumers to look for every possible way to save.

“We understand the consumers’ struggles to beat the heat. Hence, we have doubled the amount of special Cashback campaigns from March onwards to benefit shoppers. The great news is that many e-commerce players have agreed to continue joining our campaigns to bring more savings for shoppers. Through this, shoppers will be able to save up to 30% or more, with e-store’s discounts and rebates,” Gil said.
More than 280,000 Malaysians are now using ShopBack to access discounted deals and earn Cashback online every month. The company’s data also shows that local shoppers have transferred at least RM4million into their local bank account in 2015.

“Let’s say you are planning a cool retreat for your family at Cameron Highland. A hotel is giving 30% off the RM350 family suite price at Agoda = RM245 after discount. ShopBack customers just need to click Agoda at our site, continue booking as usual and they will be entitled to RM55 Cashback on top of discount, during our special campaign period,” he added.
Alongside with Agoda, the ongoing Mother’s Day campaign (1 May – 8 May) showcases 19 other participating e-stores such as Expedia, Lazada, Zalora, ASOS, Reebonz, Taobao, and Hermo. Each merchant will provide different Cashback offer.
Registration is free and every redirected transaction will get Cashback notification within 48 hours. Money can be transferred into the selected local bank account once it turns redeemable.
