The recent Sunway International Photography Competition (SIPC) drew close to 2,000 entries in four categories namely architecture, communities, landscapes and culture & festivals from photographers throughout the nation. Thirty-four winners walked away with more than RM100, 000 worth of prizes at the prize giving ceremony yesterday.

Chen Soon Ling took home the Grand Prize of RM10, 000 cash, two nights stay at The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, 10,000 Sunway Pals points and an award certificate with his winning photograph of Sunway Lagoon’s latest attraction, Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon under the Communities category. Capturing the exuberance of the moment with his shot at the Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon, the Grand Prize winner Mr Chen Soon Ling was ecstatic the image of the boys enjoying the waters was chosen as the best image in the Sunway International Photography Competition.

“I am overjoyed that my photograph has been selected for both the first and grand prize. I feel honoured and grateful to the judges for selecting my photograph. I was at the Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon theme park and noticed how beautiful and unique the scene was through the window especially with the combination of sunlight and flash.”

“To me the vibrant colours and joyful mood illustrated what Sunway Lagoon is all about. Words can't describe my joy at winning this year”, he added.

The panel of judges for SIPC was delighted at the levels of creativity, relevance and originality exhibited by the participants of various age groups who took part in the competition from 30 December 2015 till 30 March 2016. The judges comprising industry professionals went through a rigorous selection process to select the competition winners.

“I was particularly impressed with the photographs under the Architecture category as the photographers in this category thoughtfully framed and composed their shots to showcase the unique elements of the buildings involved”, said Mr Henry Wong, secretary of the Society of Photographers of Malaysia who was one of the judges.

Busy capturing unique architectural moments around the three townships of Sunway that is Sunway Resort City, Sunway City Ipoh and Sunway Iskandar, the Sunway Landscapes category is the only category to have six winners in the Merits segment alongside the three main prizes.

The other three categories of architecture, communities and culture & festivals each have five winners in the Merits segment alongside the three main prizes per category. In her speech at the prize giving ceremony, EXCO member of Sunway Group Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah congratulated all the participants for coming together as a community of passionate photographers and using the SIPC as a platform to showcase their unique viewpoints.

“This competition has been an eye-opening experience for many of us living within the Sunway properties. We have been looking at the same views as everyone else here today. Yet, with the click of a camera button - the shutterbugs have shown us that these unique moments captured simply cannot be replicated in the next second, minute or day”, said Puan Sri Dr. Susan Cheah.

With both Sunway Group and Society of Photographers Malaysia as the main organiser and co-organiser, respectively, the SIPC event collaborated with Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Sunway Putra Mall and Sunway Pals. The SIPC has successfully allowed aspiring photographers an avenue to express their voice and creativity through the viewfinder.

All winning photos will be exhibited at Sunway Pyramid Mall (Lower Level 2, between Guardian and Nando’s) from 29 April to 8 May and Sunway Putra Mall (Level 2) from 10 to 22 May.
