LASIK
LASIK (Known as Laser Assisted Stromal In-Situ Keratomileusis) involves the creation of a corneal flap in combination with the accuracy of the excimer laser technology to correct refractive errors without pain and minimal scarring. The laser corrects vision by reshaping the cornea so that its focusing power can be corrected and the image can be focused onto the retina without the use of spectacles or contact lenses.
Although the whole LASIK procedure is around 8-10 minutes, the actual laser treatment time is only 60 seconds. Imagine, in 60 seconds, you will have freedom to see, freedom to live and freedom to enjoy life. Freedom for LIFE!
There are 3 simple steps for LASIK:
Step 1:
A thin flap of cornea is 'peeled' using a Bausch & Lomb Hansatome Microkeratome

Step 2:
Laser treatment is used to sculpt the cornea & treat the refractive errors

Step 3:
The corneal flap is placed to its original position without any stitches

Cataract
In our eye, there is a lens which works like the lens in a camera to focus images we see onto the retina (like the film in the camera). This lens is clear when we are young but starts to cloud after the age of 50 years. This clouding is called a cataract and causes blurred vision like looking through a frosted glass.
The most common cause of cataract is due to old age usually from the age of 50 years. Other causes of cataracts are eye injuries, intake of certain medications such as steroids and diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Sometimes it may be present at birth or inherited as a genetic defect.
The procedure, called Phacoemulsification (dissolving the cataract in Latin) uses ultrasonic energy to emulsify (or dissolve) the cataract for removal through a phaco probe.
Step 1:
A very small 'No Stitch' incision (2.75 mm) is made on the side of the cornea.

Step 2:
The probe is inserted through this incision into the eye to break up the cataract into smaller fragments by using ultrasonic energy. These fragments are then removed by using a suction device within the probe.

Step 3:
A small 'foldable' intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye to replace the cataract lens.

Step 4:
The IOL is position at the same location as the natural lens within the lens capsule. The wound does not require any stitches as it is self-healing.

Typically the procedure takes less than 15 minutes and is done on a day care basis, under local anaesthesia, so you can go home the same day after a little rest.
Although cataracts usually develop simultaneously in both eyes, your surgeon will operate on one eye and allow it to heal (around 1-2 weeks) before operating on the other cataract.
