In this episode, Malaysiakini and KiniEvents have teamed up with Taiwan Excellence, to share exclusive insights on the latest innovations from Taiwan and learn more about how these award-winning products have elevated us to embrace digital fitness during these trying times.

The Taiwan Excellence is the name that carries the honour of Taiwan’s premium products, it is the symbol of recognising quality and innovative products from Taiwan. Every year, local businesses vie for the rights to be awarded the mark of Taiwan Excellence. Businesses have to go through a rigorous selection process covering all aspects of a product design, from R&D to right down to marketing. Products that have been chosen for the Taiwan Excellence Award would serve a cornerstone of the homegrown industries and be advanced by the government in the international market.

Johnson Fitness

Jerry Neogh, Commercial Sales Assistant Manager of Johnson Fitness tells us more about what Johnson fitness is all about and how they overcame the fitness industry struggles during the pandemic.

Johnson Fitness has been manufacturing for over 40 years. Their commercial fitness brand, Matrix Fitness has established itself as one the world’s premier and among the fastest-growing manufacturers that consistently meets the demands of fitness suppliers all over the world. Johnson Fitness’ culture piques innovative thinking, applauds fresh ideas, and values creative problem solving.

Jerry then introduced Johnson @ Mirror, a certified Taiwan Excellence product that is currently available only in Taiwan and soon to be in Malaysia. With the ability to join friends for a class, easily track your progress, and always having a new variety of workout sessions, the Mirror is a great option during these challenging times. It’s the easiest way to bring the cardio and strength training experience into your home.

The unique selling point of this product is the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) coaching, which utilises the 3-D mapping of your body to help you refine your form and mirror your instructor’s movement while showing you the accuracy of your movement to your instructor. Thus, improving your results and reducing injuries.

With the situation of the pandemic, and home being the safest place at the moment, Johnson @ Mirror is angled towards the Business to Consumer (B2C) market than the Business to Business (B2B) market.

Body Charger Fitness

Body Charger Fitness is a brand of Gee Hoo Industrial Corp, the leading fitness equipment company in Taiwan, committed to providing safe, high-grade fitness equipment and wellness solutions.

James, Sr. of Sales and Marketing Manager of Body Charger Fitness, introduced the Taiwan Excellence awarded product, the GB7007 Recumbent Linear Stepper, which provides a solution for those who want a low-impact and full-body workout. The innovative linear stepping motion is incredibly smooth and easy on joints for those under rehabilitation or in need of physiotherapy and elderly people.

Being a wheelchair friendly product, the GB7007 Recumbent Linear Stepper helps the physiology trainer assist the disable, rehabilitation user or elder to enter or leave the seat much easier. Apart from that, its orthopedic foot and heel support was intended to reduce the danger of injury, increase support to frail joints, or alleviate pressure brought about by work out.

Muscle mass and strength decreases as we start aging. What are the innovations that Body Charger came up with in tackling this issue?

Physically inactive people can lose as much as 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after age 30. Even if you are active, you’ll still have some muscle loss. Sarcopenia typically happens faster around age 60.

“We have developed this product with a precise design and most importantly we display more information on mass. There are different intensities based on our daily activities that we do. Maybe if you lay in bed, you will not be using much muscle compared to running on a treadmill,” James said.

“The difference with the machines we develop is that we focus on watts meaning how much power you are able to produce when using the devices. That is how people are able to measure their body strengths and capabilities as they start aging,” he added.

Synapse Rehab Consulting

Chartered physiotherapist and director of Synapse Rehab Consulting, Marc Daniel, says that physiotherapy is needed by everyone at some point of their life, be it elderly people, adults or even children. Since the pandemic occurred, they had to change, adapt and diversify their service provisions. “We had to digitalize almost every aspect of our physiotherapy centre be it from appointments, consultations and even some treatments,” Marc added.

In terms of the pandemic, how will the physiotherapy services improve to help clients that want to stay at home?

“We too, as a physiotherapy service, will have an online platform and most companies or private hospitals already have that now,” Marc responded.

“One of the ways to help rehab someone back to working or full activities of daily living is to self manage themselves. So in that sense, rather than seeing someone three times a week to rehab them, I will try to see them on the first visit and the subsequent meetings can be made via online,” he added.

The processes of private centres and hospitals should be automated. If most of the medical processes are automated, visits can be reduced and still have as much service from home.

Medical practices, physiotherapy and rehabilitation centres need Body Charger’s equipment and Johnson @ Mirror to be available so that they can help their patients better in the future.

How can digital fitness sustain even after post-Covid times? Will people still rely on digital fitness?

It is important to know how much of exercise our body needs especially when using machines and in processes of weight loss or weight gain. We need to keep track of our body composition in order to know how much or how little physical training is needed and also knowing risks of undergoing or overdoing something.

“Based on my research, millennials use fitness applications more than other age groups. With women using it twice as much as men. 54% are more likely to buy body analysing devices,” Jerry said.

The online business market has increased in success ever since the pandemic started from being in the 26th place in 2020 to the 1st place in 2021 according to Jerry. It has encouraged more businesses to operate via online platforms since people are no longer leaving the comfort of their homes to purchase items or carry out their daily activities indoors.

“Technology is so advanced in such a way that you can exercise with anyone from any part of the world at the same time. So digital fitness is here to stay,” Marc added.

The future of healthcare now is personalisation, so there’s no such thing as “one size fits all” anymore, everything is catered and designed specifically for the individual.
