OrphanAid, a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by Raja Singham, co-founder of BAC Education Group and Uplift, has officially launched to empower orphans across Malaysia to access tertiary education through a sustainable funding model. The programme guarantees a 75% bursary for eligible orphans, with the remaining 25% covered via low-interest loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) or sponsorships from donors.

Key Elements of the Initiative

OrphanAid partners with universities, colleges, and private donors to fund 75% of tuition fees for orphans in any registered orphanage, regardless of race, religion, or background. Students can secure the remaining 25% through PTPTN loans or other sources. This dual-funding approach ensures financial barriers do not hinder academic aspirations.

In collaboration with Rotary International District 3300 Malaysia, the initiative will also leverage Rotary’s extensive network to identify eligible students and provide additional support. Furthermore, donors contributing to OrphanAid can benefit from tax exemptions through Yayasan Kelab-Kelab Rotary Malaysia (YKKRM), ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the disbursement of funds.

Raja Singham, a vocal advocate for accessible education, emphasised the urgency of the initiative; “No child should be denied a future because of circumstances beyond their control. Education is the ultimate equaliser; it breaks cycles of poverty and unlocks potential. OrphanAid is not charity; it’s an investment in Malaysia’s future. By uniting institutions, donors, and government resources, we’re creating a legacy of hope.”

Eligibility and Application Process

Orphans aged 18–25 who are under the care of a registered orphanage and meet the entry requirements are eligible. Applicants must submit proof of residence at the orphanage, transcripts, and financial need documentation. A committee will review applications, prioritising academic merit and socioeconomic need.
