Advanced procedure offers safer, less invasive option for patients with heart rhythm disorders

KUCHING, 5 August 2025 - KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital (“KPJ Kuching”) has marked a key advancement in cardiac care with the successful completion of Borneo’s first cardiac ablation using the PulseSelect™ pulsed field ablation (“PFA”) technology. This new approach offers improved precision, faster recovery and reduced impact on surrounding tissues for patients with heart rhythm disorders.

Dr Koh Keng Tat, Consultant Cardiologist at KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital (fifth from left) together with his surgical team successfully completed Borneo’s first cardiac ablation using the PulseSelect™ pulsed field ablation technology.

KPJ Kuching’s Consultant Cardiologist Dr Koh Keng Tat led the procedure, supported by the hospital’s specialised electrophysiology team. It was performed on a patient with atrial fibrillation (“AFib”), a common heart rhythm disorder that can cause palpitations, fatigue and increase the risk of stroke if left untreated. The team used next-generation PFA technology, which treats abnormal heart signals by delivering controlled pulses of energy to specific areas of heart tissue.

Chin Keat Chyuan, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, said, “We are honoured to be the first in Borneo to introduce this advancement in cardiac care, reflecting our commitment to patient-centred innovation and broader access to advanced cardiac solutions. By introducing procedures such as PFA, we are expanding access to safer and more precise care. It also reinforces our ‘Care for Life’ purpose, ensuring that hospitals like KPJ Kuching continue to serve their communities with excellence while strengthening the Group’s clinical capabilities.”

Dr Koh added,This technology allows us to target abnormal heart tissue with greater precision while minimising impact on surrounding structures. For suitable patients, it offers a shorter procedure time, fewer complications and a quicker return to daily life.”

Access to advanced electrophysiology procedures remains limited in many parts of East Malaysia, which can delay timely care for patients. KPJ Kuching’s success with this procedure helps close that gap by improving access to advanced cardiac services in the region.
