JOHOR BAHRU, 25 August 2025 – Johor Specialist Hospital (“JSH”), part of the KPJ Healthcare Berhad (“KPJ Healthcare”) network, has become the first hospital in Malaysia to adopt the ZEISS KINEVO 900 S Robotic Visualisation System in neurosurgery. The system is applied across three specialised areas at JSH which are neurosurgery, spinal surgery and combined endoscopic microsurgery. This advancement deepens subspecialty services and gives patients greater access to advanced treatment options.
Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Sharon Casilda Theophilus and her team recently carried out a minimally invasive procedure to remove a tumour on the left side of the skull. The operation combined the new system with a surgical navigation platform to assist accurate visualisation and instrument guidance.
The technology gives surgeons and their teams a shared three-dimensional 4K image in real time, which supports teamwork and training. It is used in delicate brain procedures, including aneurysm repair, pituitary tumours and skull base surgery.
It also enables targeting for biopsies and deep brain stimulation, assists with spinal screw placement and deformity correction, as well as supporting reconstructions in ear, nose, throat (“ENT”) and sinus surgery. Its robotic assisted functions help reduce workflow interruptions and minimise manual adjustments, enabling surgeons to stay focused during long and delicate operations.
