Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (“DSH2”), part of KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s (“KPJ Healthcare”) network of hospitals, marks another milestone for the KPJ Health System with the introduction of Supine High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (“HIFU”), setting a new benchmark as the first hospital in Southeast Asia to offer this non-invasive treatment for uterine fibroids.
Conventional HIFU procedures are typically carried out with patients in a prone (face-down) position for extended periods. The supine approach allows treatment to be performed in a face-up position, offering a more natural position that may reduce discomfort during longer procedures.
HIFU is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target fibroid tissue without the need for incisions or removal of the uterus. It is generally suitable for selected patients, particularly those with moderate-sized fibroids in appropriate locations.

Uterine fibroids are a common condition that can affect women’s quality of life. Traditional treatment approaches may involve surgery, including myomectomy or hysterectomy, which can require longer recovery periods. HIFU provides a non-surgical option for selected cases while preserving the uterus.
While HIFU offers a non-invasive treatment option, careful patient selection remains important. It is generally most suitable for patients with moderately sized fibroids that are limited in number and located away from sensitive surrounding structures. For more complex cases, alternative uterus-preserving procedures such as laparoscopic or hysteroscopic myomectomy may be considered.
At DSH2, the procedure is performed by Consultant Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Dr Liew Yen Eit and Dr Haliza Kamarudin, supporting the hospital’s broader women’s health services.
Commenting on this development, Chin Keat Chyuan, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare said, “The introduction of Supine HIFU at DSH2 reflects how we are strengthening women’s health services through targeted innovation that improves how care is delivered. A milestone for KPJ Health System, it reinforces our commitment to advancing care delivery through less invasive treatment options that preserve clinical outcomes and enhance patient experience. This development demonstrates how we are applying technology in a practical and responsible manner, guided by our purpose of Care for Life.”

Dr Liew Yen Eit, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at DSH2 said, “The supine approach changes how the procedure is experienced by patients. It allows treatment to be carried out in a more comfortable position while maintaining the level of precision required for effective fibroid treatment.”

Dr Haliza Kamarudin, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at DSH2 added, “This provides an additional option for women who are exploring alternatives to surgery, particularly those who wish to preserve their uterus. Careful assessment remains important to determine suitability for this treatment.”

The introduction of Supine HIFU at DSH2 reflects the hospital’s continued focus on advancing women’s health services through the appropriate use of technology and specialist care, in line with the broader direction of the KPJ Health System. This direction is further reflected in its recent recognition as Specialty Hospital of the Year (Women’s) – Malaysia at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026.
