Selangor, 22 May 2026 – KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital (“KPJ Selangor”), part of KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s (“KPJ Healthcare” or the “Group”) network of hospitals, has successfully performed the first HOBBIT Minimally Invasive Surgery (“MIS”) Cement Screw procedure in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region, marking a significant milestone in complex spinal care under the KPJ Health System (“KPJHS”).

The procedure involved the use of HOBBIT MIS cement screws, an advanced spinal fixation technology designed to support greater surgical precision and stability in complex spinal procedures. As a minimally invasive approach, the procedure is designed to reduce tissue disruption and support faster post-operative recovery compared to conventional open spine surgery, which typically involves larger incisions and longer rehabilitation periods.

The procedure was led by KPJ Selangor’s Consultant Orthopaedic (Spine) Surgeons Dr Shaharuddin Abdul Rhani and Dr Jamal Azmi Mohamad, together with the hospital’s multidisciplinary surgical team.

Commenting on the milestone, Chin Keat Chyuan, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare said, “This achievement reflects the growing depth of subspecialty expertise across the KPJ Health System and our continued focus on advancing complex care capabilities within our hospitals. Being the first in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region to perform this procedure reinforces our commitment to strengthening minimally invasive surgical capabilities that support more precise surgical care, better recovery and improved patient experience. Guided by our Care for Life purpose, we remain focused on applying innovation meaningfully to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.”

Dr Jamal Azmi Mohamad, Medical Director at KPJ Selangor said “This achievement reflects the collective expertise and coordination of our multidisciplinary teams in delivering complex spinal procedures safely and effectively. We remain committed to advancing spine care through evidence-based practices, continuous learning and treatment approaches that prioritise patient safety, recovery and long-term outcomes.”

Dr Shaharuddin Abdul Rhani, Consultant Orthopaedic (Spine) Surgeon said “Minimally invasive spine surgery continues to evolve rapidly and technologies such as the HOBBIT MIS Cement Screw system allow us to perform complex procedures with greater precision while reducing surgical impact on patients. These approaches can support faster recovery, lower post-operative discomfort and earlier rehabilitation, which are important aspects of modern spine care.”
