KPJ Kluang Specialist Hospital (“KPJ Kluang”), part of KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s (“KPJ Healthcare” or the “Group”) network of hospitals, has successfully performed Southern Malaysia’s first FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation (“PFA”) procedure, strengthening access to advanced heart rhythm treatment within the southern region under the KPJ Health System (“KPJHS”).

The FARAPULSE pulsed field ablation technology delivers controlled electrical pulses to selectively target abnormal heart tissue while minimising impact on surrounding structures.

The procedure was performed using FARAPULSE PFA technology to treat heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation. Unlike conventional ablation methods that use thermal energy, the technology delivers controlled electrical pulses to selectively target abnormal heart tissue while minimising impact on surrounding structures.

As a minimally invasive approach, pulsed field ablation may offer clinical advantages for suitable patients, including reduced discomfort, shorter procedure and recovery time, and the potential to reduce certain procedural risks. The technology reflects continued progress in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders and expands treatment options for patients with complex heart rhythm disorders.

The procedure was led by Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist Dr Ng Kim Fong with KPJ Kluang’s cardiac electrophysiology team. The milestone also marks the first FARAPULSE PFA procedure within the KPJ Healthcare network to be performed by a resident specialist.

In a separate milestone, KPJ Kluang also became the first private hospital in the region to perform a procedure using the Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (“S-ICD”), further strengthening the hospital’s specialised cardiac services.

Chin Keat Chyuan, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare said, “This milestone reflects the continued strengthening of specialised cardiac services across the KPJ Health System, particularly in expanding access to advanced heart rhythm treatment within the southern region. The introduction of procedures such as FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation reflects how hospitals within our network are continuing to strengthen subspecialty capabilities and adopt newer treatment approaches that support more precise and less invasive care for patients. Guided by our Care for Life purpose, we remain committed to ensuring communities can access advanced specialist treatment closer to home while continuing to strengthen clinical excellence across our hospitals.”

Dr Ng Kim Fong, Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at KPJ Kluang said pulsed field ablation supports a more targeted approach in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. He added, “This technology allows us to perform procedures with greater precision while reducing unnecessary impact on surrounding heart tissue. As cardiac electrophysiology continues to evolve, these approaches help expand treatment options and support safer, less invasive care for suitable patients.”

The S-ICD is a device used to monitor heart rhythm and deliver therapy in cases of life-threatening arrhythmias. Unlike conventional systems, it is implanted under the skin without leads being placed inside the heart or blood vessels, which may help reduce certain procedural risks for selected patients.

As the only private hospital in Kluang equipped with a Catheterisation Laboratory, KPJ Kluang has performed close to 1,450 cardiac procedures, reflecting the hospital’s growing experience in cardiovascular interventions and its role in expanding access to specialised cardiac care within the region.

These milestones also support efforts to reduce the need for patients to travel to major urban centres for advanced cardiac treatment and follow-up care.

As part of the KPJ Health System, the achievement reflects KPJ Healthcare’s continued efforts to strengthen specialised cardiac and heart rhythm services through a more connected healthcare ecosystem that integrates multidisciplinary expertise, shared clinical standards and the integration of Practice, Education, Research and Innovation across the Group’s hospitals.
