Sidec’s Selangor Startup Day showcases thriving startup communities

Recently, Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) successfully organised their very first Selangor Startup Day. It was a momentous event that celebrated the achievements of 9 startups that participated in the Pitch Malaysia USA Series programme, a four-in-one programme, placing them in the spotlight of global investors to scale globally.

Selangor Startup Day also serves as a platform for these 9 outstanding startups in a sharing session and to demonstrate their progress they have made since their trip to Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. from 1 May 2023 to 7 May 2023, which includes industrial visits, networking with Malaysian Diaspora community, pitching sessions with US-based and global startups, as well as participation at the 2023 SelectUSA Investment Summit.

These startups, representing various sectors such as technology, healthcare, sustainability, and more have captivated the audience with their groundbreaking solutions and compelling entrepreneurial journeys.

Selangor Startup Day highlights the thriving entrepreneurial landscape in Selangor

For Sidec, this effort is in line with the State's goal to make Selangor a regional digital hub for startup companies and the digital industry to boost the country's digital economic activities. Since its inception in 2018, Sidec has nurtured over 150 startup communities and encouraged their active involvement in various initiatives such as the Pitch Malaysia USA Series and the Selangor Accelerator Program (SAP).

"Sidec recognises the pivotal role that startups play in driving innovation, creating job opportunities, and contributing to economic growth. To support and empower startups, Sidec has implemented a range of programs, resources, and platforms aimed at fostering a conducive ecosystem for their development,” said Yong Kai Ping, CEO of Sidec.

“From the very beginning, Sidec has understood the importance of expanding horizons and networks for our startups, organising industrial visits to destinations such as Beijing, Hangzhou, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh, and Bangkok,” said Dato' Teng Chang Khim.

During the event, several significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signings took place. These include the agreements between Selangor Digital School and VirtualTech Frontier, Selangor Digital School and Accendo Technologies, and Wavpay and Revenue Monster.

“From our trip to the U.S, we managed to connect with many potential collaborators and we hope to partner with them soon to bring what we have to the next level.” said Jason Low, Founder and CEO of VirtualTech Frontier, who managed to score 3rd place in the recent prestigious SelectUSA Tech Regional Pitching Session. 

“Malaysia has such a rapidly growing startup ecosystem, hence it is important for these startups to network and explore more opportunities for them to continue evolving not only locally but also internationally,” advised Nadia Ismadi, CEO and co-founder of Pod.

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including Yang Berhormat Dato' Teng Chang Khim, Selangor Executive Councillor for Industry and Trade, who showed his support for the startup community. The event was also attended by YM Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim, Chief Executive Officer of Permodalan Neger Selangor Berhad (PNSB); and Yong Kai Ping, Chief Executive Officer of Sidec, who brought with them their invaluable expertise and insights into the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
