I refer to the letter We're not heating up the Earth, the Sun is!

I was most disappointed with the above letter. Disappointed primarily from the misinformation he was fomenting and secondarily from the simplistic views he has chosen to take.

He circles areas of population on a globe and extrapolates from that that we don't occupy enough land mass to make a difference? Influence is not proportionate to size or volume. It never was.

And to say that it does is simplistic to the extreme. Black holes stop light from escaping and swallow galaxies whole etc. The amount of space they occupy? None.

No one should draw parallels without some semblance of rational logic.

His quote: ‘Now, how big a fire will I need to heat up all the land mass too? Now, how about the air around us? Really, could the last 40 – 50 years of human activity like industries, driving our loveable cars and riding our motorbikes done all that? Hmm...kind of tak masuk akal ...’

Just what kind of a question is this? Does he have any idea what is causing global warming? It’s greenhouse gases.

At the last count, our supposed ‘small’ band of human populace was dumping something like seven billion tonnes of carbon per year into the atmosphere just by the burning of fossil fuels.

Seven billion!

And that’s just carbon. Add to that mix CFCs from air-conditioning systems to propellants in our aerosols and a whole host of other stuff all of which trap infrared radiation and retain it within the atmosphere.

Yes. it’s the sun that’s the heat generator, but we are trapping that heat by indiscriminate waste, pollution and apathy. Add to this, ignorance which not only is the writer guilty off but is actually propagating.

Turning off the lights doesn’t just mean that we generate less heat from all our little lights being turned off. It means for that hour we generated less heat, used less energy, and produced less greenhouses gases in the generation of that energy.

Ultimately though, it would have driven home the point that we are all concerned about the future of this planet and were each willing to do something about it.

The last thing we need is someone coming along with what little he knows, side tracking good intentions. Ignorance might be bliss but it’s also dangerous.
