It took me a good deal of contemplation before I finally decided I should make the time and effort to share this terrible experience of mine.

I went to seek for a consultation at Klinik Famili Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur recently regarding a personal matter. The doctor in charge that day was an old Muslim woman.

I told her about my problem and was disappointed that the doctor was being very judgmental towards me when she asked if I used tampons, which I then said ‘yes'.

She was surprised that I used tampons because I am a Muslim. She then started being judgmental and unprofessional by saying, and I quote, ‘It seems to me like you don't care about your ‘dara' (virginity)'.

Well, who is she to accuse me of such things? You are a doctor and you should be prepared to hear whatever your patients tell you, regardless of their race/religion/status.

She should also accept the fact that Muslims do use tampons too, even if they're not married. And yes, I'm a Muslim, but then everyone is entitled to his/her own freedom of choice.

Moreover, when she suggested that I take some pills, I asked more about how the pills work. I was shocked when she then said - loudly - while giggling with her colleague cum receptionist cum pharmacist who was in the next room and I quote:

‘Why do people have so many questions when it comes to pills but ‘bila guna tampons tak takut pulak' (not afraid to use tampons)'.

That was very unprofessional of her to say it out loud and what she said was very judgmental. I, as her patient, have the right to know how the pills work and she as the doctor should be able to explain and consult with me regarding that matter.

But she laughed out loud and insulted me instead. She should have also been discreet about what I told her as I was her patient. Whatever I told her should be private and confidential, between a doctor and a patient.

But there's more. I asked her if the problem that I'm having had anything to do with my diet, because I read some on-line articles saying that eating habits could have been one of the causes. She then said, ‘Go la follow the Internet'.

That was ridiculously rude of her. Finally, she said she'd give me antibiotics and some other pills, and she then said and I quote: ‘Okay, go wait outside ______ (my name)'.

She was rude, unprofessional and judgmental. I am just so very disappointed. I hope the clinic will take action to improve their services and communication skills so that they can treat their patients professionally.
