I am writing this because Malay Mail have been fooling people long enough and claiming to be the paper that cares. I have had two bad experiences with them where I requested for them to highlight an issue which is of public interest and they refuse to do so as they were only interested in highlighting cases where people had already been cheated instead of highlighting them before people get cheated.

The first case was pertaining to sexually explicit and vulgar calls made from private numbers which affect women and girls. My girlfriends and I had been receiving sexually explicit and vulgar calls from private numbers.

Sometime ago, the Telecommunication Ministry came up with the ruling that all mobile numbers, even prepaid, have to be registered to ensure that any threatening calls or SMSes can be traced back to the person. However despite this ruling, mobile companies still allow their users to make calls from private numbers thereby defeating the purpose of registering the numbers and allowing men to make such calls and not be traced.

I called Malay Mail and requested that they do a write up on this questioning why mobile companies are allowing such calls, as only by highlighting such issue, action will be taken. However, to my disappointment, they tell me they cannot highlight this issue unless a police report has been made. What is wrong with highlighting an issue to create awareness?

Moreover, how am I suppose to make a report as I do not have any number listed on my phone. So am I suppose to make a report just saying, 'I received a sexually explicit call from I don't know who'. Anyway, I left it at that.

The second issue was when being a pet lover, I found out that the latest scam by Africans were targeted at pet lovers where they claim to have exotic kittens from good homes. When you contact them, they would tell you that they are in another country and ask you to send the delivery charges via Western Union for the delivery of the kitten. For this I had all the evidence as I had exchanged emails with the scammer and also received a mail from a so-called pet courier company asking me to send the money via Western Union to their so-called director based in Nigeria. Many scam ads were placed on adpost.com and mudah.com with pictures of cute adorable kittens.

I then first called the Star paper. The guy who spoke to me acted interested and told me he would get back to me but he did not. I knew they were only interested in acting as a government propaganda device and not highlight issues of public interest. Anyway, the Star not getting back to me was not an issue as they had never claimed to be the paper that cares, but the Malay Mail did.

Then, I called Malay Mail hoping that at least this time since I had all the evidence they would take up the case and inform the public to be aware of such scams. I was first asked to relate the issue to the person I spoke, then she put me to the editor. This guy really sounded arrogant and uninterested as I explained to him the issue. From his tone, it seemed as if he thought I was wasting his time. I then asked him directly that if he is not interested, tell me straight so I need not waste my time. He then felt offended and sarcastically told me that he would like to compliment me for being able to judge a person. I sarcastically thanked him back. In any case, this guy claims to be an editor and yet he does not know the simple fact that the tone of voice can give a person's mood away. He obviously has a lot to learn. Or maybe he was just trying to be arrogant, thinking that being an editor of a newspaper is a big deal.

By then I was pissed off. Then, he puts me to a reporter to repeat the whole story for the third time. She asked to email all the evidence to her which I did. All the emails exchanged with the scammer was emailed to her. I also send her a mail telling her to please inform me, if they are not willing to highlight this issue, so that I will look for other avenues to make sure pet lovers do not get cheated.

She ask me if I know anyone who has actually paid the money and got cheated. I said no but the email itself is clear that it's a scam. I never heard back from her and neither have I seen anything written about this issue. So, is Malay Mail willing to only highlight issues where people have already got cheated instead of highlighting it to create awareness before people get cheated? Despite having all the evidence, they did not even bother to investigate the issue nor publish it to create awareness, and yet they claim the be the best in investigative journalism? What crap.

I have since being visiting all pet sites to ensure that such scam ads are reported to the administrators simply because I do not want pet lovers to be cheated or scammed, and I have to do this because a newspaper that claims to care does not really care about people getting cheated. They are only interested in highlighting issues which people are already aware of. After I kept doing this, the scammers stopped for a while, but lately I have noticed they have resurfaced again.

Or maybe they think pet lovers are just not worth their time and paper.

To the Malay Mail , please change your tagline to 'THE PAPER THAT DOES NOT CARE'. Stop trying to fool the public that you care. You have arrogant editors who have no idea how to deal or talk to people. They should be sent for a course on how to communicate as they fail to realise that over the phone, a persons tone is enough to let the other party know how he or she feels.

To all pet lovers, please do not pay for any animal in advance until you receive the animal. Pictures shown on the sites are of beautiful exotic kittens which they actually do not have. Insist on Cash On Delivery. They will try to convince you that they are genuine and only want a good home for the pet, and tell you to send the delivery charges amounting to approximately RM400. Do not send any money to anyone. Please beware
