Last Sunday, I spotted construction work going on at the monorail station. It seems a foot pathway or guiding block is being constructed - perhaps for the vision impaired and the blind.

Silver metal is being used for construction of the guiding block but I question its suitability for the visually impaired.

The silver is slippery. It is difficult to detect underfoot and it becomes more slippery when wet, which defeats the purpose of its construction in the first place.

The guiding block is to assist sight-impaired people to warn them of dangers, obstacles and hazards ahead, or serve as guide to the correct route to follow.

The guiding block must be detectable underfoot, must be easily installed and maintained, must be of durable non-slip material and have colours contrasting with adjacent surfaces.

More importantly, it should be painted yellow, because yellow is always associated with the word ‘caution'. Yellow is also a more easily discernible colour for those with low vision.
