I refer to the Malaysikini article Gated community, or not?

Having lived in one of these so-called ‘gated’ communities for the last three years, all I can say is that the concept is a waste of time and money and only gives the paranoid the opportunity to exercise their paranoia at other people's expense.

To start with, this suburb is like a sieve for there are so many access points. Even by closing them off and erecting a 5 ft wire mesh fence, there is nothing really substantial to stop anyone from entering if they really wanted to.

The disruption in traffic flow by the Residents Association making irrational, ill-thought out decisions have been compounded as they introduce more and more regulations in an attempt to cover their original poor decisions.

The situation has now reached ultimate insanity where they are trying to monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic through a single on-way access point!

The Resident Association made no attempt to monitor crime before introducing this 'security' system so it beggars me how they know they have reduced crime. I doubt that they even monitor crime these days to support their claims

The bottom lines are - It is up to the individual home-owner to look after his/her own security.

It is a task that cannot be delegated to a third party especially as that third party really has no more interest in your security that has any passing criminal.

And home owners should bear in mind that these ‘security services’ can only ever be a passive deterrent. The is no way they would be allowed to intervene physically if they saw your home being invaded

The end result of these wonderful schemes is disruption, and delusion and the further entrenchment of the fear dominated philosophy that rules this society.
