We should learn from the Penans, not they from us

I refer to the Malaysiakini report ‘Penan will die if the jungle destroyed’ .

I am sad to see this and would like to suggest a Malaysian-based petition to either stop or reduce the logging in Sarawak. Logging in the Penans’ area should be totally stopped and compensation should be given to them as they are the bumiputera there.

This is their land and they have the right to protect their land. Development is not about building houses and sending their kids away for a so-called ‘education’.

Development is about building a moral person with a developed mentality which will help his or her people to survive in the future.

I am totally amazed as to how the Penans survived for centuries before we set foot on their land. We should learn from them instead.

I would also like to call upon all local and international NGOs to help to prevent the destruction of the rainforests in Malaysia. Logging should be carried out with careful measurement and forest replanting should be done by the logging companies.

Don't repeat the mistakes done by the West. The rainforests are our jewel-like resource and we should treasure it.

I do hope all Malaysians are aware of what we are leaving for our children in the future. Stop logging and bravo to the Penans!
