Violence has become part and parcel of human behavior since the time we can remember. Violence seem to be the ultimate solution to decide who is superior and who is inferior, who is to lead and who is to follow, who is the perpetrator and who is the victim, who is strong and who is weak etc.

Surprisingly, the violence between animals, if assessed, seems to be more on the logical side. They mainly indulge in violence over food (which is their basic necessity). At times, they indulge in violence for territorial control, the right to mate and when their very existence is threatened or at stake.

Shockingly, humans, who are supposed to be wiser and more intelligent than animals, lose out to animals when it comes to the purpose for violence. No doubt the killing of animals for food remains the primary reason (just as in the case of animals) but the use of violence is not confined to that purpose alone.

Humans have developed civilisation, culture and moral values to be followed and practiced by them. The problem is that those values are not much appreciated and pursued. It is this attitude that leads to the corruption of the human mind and the birth of crimes of greed, passion, lust, jealousy and anger.

However, violence amongst the human race seem to be under control. Not because they are remorseful and contrite but also due to the enormous manpower and funds spent on law and order. The funding for the armed forces, too, is for the same purpose.

All the events which lead to violence seem to be acceptable and tolerable (with variable magnitudes).

However, the latest mania where sports fans (hooligans) indulge in violence seems to be foolish, idiotic and extremely unbecoming. This is not only taking place in the international arena but also at local events.

The excuses the so-called ‘fans’ express included that ‘We hate the referee!’, ‘Our team lost!’, ‘It was a boring game!’ Can this be taken as valid reasons to physically attack and injure the referee, the opposing team players and fans of the opposing team?

It is moronic to destroy the seats, inventory and the fixtures and fittings of the stadium. Hundreds of thousands of ringgit worth of equipment gets destroyed

The respective sports associations of Malaysia (irrespective of the sports they represent) should enforce their punishment for such offences to be a deterrent. I really wonder how firecrackers and fireworks could be taken into a stadium undetected.

Just because one faction has a different ideology than the other, there is a lot of violence taking place in all nooks and corners of the globe. The aged, the young and women (all mostly unarmed) get killed just because of some individuals’ quest of power.

In the above aspect, aren't the animals a class above humans?

Just assess the human casualties, money and time wasted in Sri Lanka during its 25 years of civil war . How about the similar losses in Afghanistan and now in Pakistan? Egoism and power- craziness seem to be manipulating these warring factions.
