I refer to Malaysiakini report Nik Aziz not an exception - MACC .

While a majority of decent Malaysians agree with the MACC statement that the menteri besar of Kelantan should not be an exception when it involves probes of corrupt practices or abuse of power, one tend to wonder aloud why high-profile corrupt practices cases involving the bigwigs of the ruling parties escapes such scrutiny ?

Nik Aziz Nik Mat may have his faults while running the Malay-majority Kelantan for the past two decades but most of the local people adore him because of his religious credentials and simple lifestyles.

Decent people know that during Tok Guru Nik Aziz’s long term in office in Kelantan, this MB has not abused his power for personal gain as he is a God- fearing person who would not want to sell his soul to the devil for mere worldly gains. How wonderful the nation can be if all political appointees have the same principles as the Tok Guru.

If MACC is really independent and does work without fear and favour, I am sure there are other high-profile cases which involved billions of public funds being siphoned by the rich and mighty which can be investigated thoroughly to put all those guilty people behinds bars with their ill-gotten gains confiscated.

But selective prosecution is the order of the day in this country where only opposition leaders and their aides are being hauled up for alleged corrupt practices while the ‘big fishes’ swim away freely with their crimes against society.

Meanwhile corrupt practices and abuse of power by those holding positions in the public and private sectors go unabated albeit in a more secret manner to escape detections by the authorities. The recent case of a former political secretary of a cabinet minister who was found with a hoard of cash in an apartment by the MACC together with luxury vehicles makes one wonder that if the ex- political secretary nett worth can be worth so much, how much more is their political master’s worth?

In order to regain it’s past glory, the MACC needs to go after the ‘big fishes’ in order to scare the daylight out of all those who engaged in the misuse of power for personal gains. No point for the MACC chief to declare that so many prominent people are under investigation for corrupt practices but at the end of the day, nothing at all comes out of it.

Mohd Khir Toyo and Azalina Aziz, a former MB and a former cabinet minister respectively were recently investigated for abuse of power and corrupt practices while they were holding power. It would be good for MACC’s image if MACC can declare publicly whether these two political figures will be prosecuted or not for their alleged crimes rather than having the allegations hanging in the air.

Less corruption means that the cost of doing business will be lower and more people will benefit even more as no hands will need to be greased in order to do business in this country. Foreign investors will come in by the dozens if our country practices transparency and good business practices with zero tolerance for graft.

Coming back to Nik Aziz, it will be frivolous for the MACC to go after him for abuse of power. They should look for bigger elephants in the room as the people nowadays prefer the ‘big fishes’ to be hauled up to court rather than making something out of nothing like what they are doing to Tok Guru right now.

MACC, stop being a bully against oppositions members but go all the way to nab the big culprits who seem to be above the law in this country.
