As a party veteran, I have observed the juvenile proceedings of the MCA with a heavy heart. However, I will be very frank here and say that the only person to have come out of this mess with any dignity is Liow Tiong Lai.

I fully support his candidacy for the MCA’s deputy presidency. Perhaps, after fighting for the last six months, it was with disappointment to some that Liow, who has been seen as the champion for the party, announced his candidacy only for the deputy presidency.

Many were expecting him to run for the presidency. Yet, I think that the move was wise for him. Some have been saying that he should continue the fight at the top level but I take his decision as proof that he was never in the race for personal glory.

His leadership of MIRT was driven by his need to see integrity restored – not to install himself as president. He is evidently not the greedy, ruthless politician who hangs on to power even as his empire falls apart around him.

He has shown an ability to stand his ground when needed and bow out where necessary. He has not been afraid of a fresh beginning.

Liow has shown a deep commitment to the party. He did not hesitate to put his ministerial post on the line or allow any other personal risks to his political career to get in the way of the party’s interests. He has been steadfast in his fight.

Under his leadership, the MIRT has been a great success on many levels. Firstly, it has managed to achieve what it started out to do – that is, to gain fresh elections. Secondly, now that it has fulfilled its purpose, it has officially disbanded, which shows great integrity in terms of its leaders and members.

Liow shows great promise as a deputy president. He is a team player. His ability to play his part in the team is indispensable.

I just hope that the central delegates choose wisely this Sunday. MCA needs their wisdom, not their greed or emotions.
