I was admitted to the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre on the morning of June 7 with chest pains and some breathing difficulty. The attending doctor in their Emergency Ward, suggested that I be admitted for some tests and I agreed. I was accordingly admitted into a two bedded ward, with an 80-year-old heart patient as my companion.

I do not have any complaints about the tests carried out. What I am taking issue with is the numerous unheeded complaints I made concerning the disturbance caused by the 80-year-old patient and his visitors. The hospital staff just did not seem to be bothered whenever I complained about the noise his visitors made.

Even during the night of my stay, this patient repeatedly caused me to wake up by constantly pressing the ‘call’ button and creating such a commotion among the nurses.

My subsequent complaints apparently fell on deaf ears and I eventually decided against the doctors' advice to discharge myself from the hospital. Never have I experienced such a disgraceful lack of care by hospital staff more so when you consider that Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre is supposed to be one of the premier hospitals in Malaysia.

I then, in fact, verbally notified the person in charge of administration of that hospital, that I would be lodging a complaint with the Malaysian Medical Association. She had the gall and audacity to tell me that I should have complained to their ‘Customer Services’ which is located on the ground floor of the hospital.

How on earth was I supposed to do that when I was up on the fifth floor? Did she actually expect me to personally go down all the way to the ground floor to voice my complaints? Is that the sort of hospitality that this hospital practises?

I am therefore hopeful that as a public service, you would initiate an investigation into the extremely poor standard of hospital service practised by this particular hospital. It is my sincere hope that a genuine improvement can be subsequently attained.
