Teach teens that sex is not all fun and games

I wish to reply to the letter Teens not equipped to make life decisions . First of all, we need to understand that teenage pregnancies are an automatic result of the Westernisation of Eastern culture.

Thus, if we choose to adopt the Western culture, we have to adopt it in its entirety. This part- acceptance and part-rejection of Western culture is causing confusion. It is naive for us in Malaysia to have co-ed schools which allow the fraternising and free intermingling between boys and girls and not expect them to have experimental sex with one another.

It is quite common in schools, for boys and girls to sit beside one another, to meet during recess and extra-curricular activities and to walk home or bus together. Many teenage boys and girls then have study sessions together and visit each others house and even spend time in each others bedrooms.

In most cases, both parents are working and the maid doesn't have the authority or time to keep an eye on what is going on in the bedroom because she is busy cooking and washing clothes.

To make matters worse, all Western music and movies promote free love and free sex between consenting boyfriends and girlfriends. In Malaysia, we tend to view pornography and nudity negatively.

However, a movie or the lyrics of a song which has sexual innuendos are just as suggestive as pornography.

Teenagers who view a music video or Hollywood film where actors/actresses and singers say things like ‘Let's make love’ or ‘I want to spend the night with you’ get the impression that casual sex is not only acceptable but is even trendy and fashionable.

The conclusion is since we have chosen to adopt a Western culture, we need to look at how the West has solved or is attempting to solve their problems. The biggest and most important solution is the handing out of and the easy access to condoms.

Also important is sex education. Usually sex education involves teaching teenagers the difficulties that unwanted pregnancies bring. This involves requiring teenage girls to wear maternity simulator suits and requiring teenage boys to carry baby dolls.

Also, pictorial and graphic images of sexually transmitted diseases also serve as a reminder of the dangers of promiscuity. Teenagers need to be informed that sex in not all fun and games and that it can have negative consequences such as pregnancy and diseases.
