I refer to the letter Teach teens that sex is not all fun and games .
Broadly, isn't Western culture is about individuality and personal freedom, explicitly not conforming to social and religious expectations and norms, but to follow your own path and decisions? The sexual revolution was a rebellion against conservatism and the puppet play of religious rhetoric with rules and laws.
Like the playground target of homosexuality, condemned as a act against God and nature. But whose God, and if it has never been a creation of human ingenuity, isn't it already Nature doing her work?
For the chorus of condemnations against premarital and teenage sex, had there been any other but repeated advices chanted by sages a couple of millenniums ago? Until the Enlightment, a period of social depression it was, and our capacity of thought had gone far since then. Without the vileness and bitterness directed against consensual participants, are there any victims in the first place or are we all just sadists, making pain out of none?
After all, we can attest that sex is great when right. Shouldn't we then educate to make it so? Rather than scaring the wits out of the youth with graphic images of physical degradation, and turning them off sex till 40, we should teach them how to make real love.
Rather than the twisted satisfaction of witnessing manifestation of crude warnings going unheeded, wouldn't we come off more humane and civilised by explaining protection and pregnancy?
And always, the myth of the Asian culture. From partaking of alcohol, drugs and smoke, debauchery, hedonism, gambling, and corruption, of all which is preached to be non-existent until the colonisation by Western sea powers.
All evidence in print and literature of glorious ancient and modern Asian civilisations indicating otherwise unmentioned and stowed away, ironically on the Internet. Even the obvious connection between institutionalised slavery and major religions remains in the black hole of Malaysian consciousness.
At the end of the day, we've got to ask ourselves, why do we think premarital and teen sex is bad? Because of unwanted pregnancies? Education, the Pill, and condoms eliminate that, unless we refuse to enlighten the youth as such.
Same as STDs. Do they know what is oral sex, and the risk of infection? Or are we just imposing our religion and our own misguided upbringing on them?
You know, maybe we all have a cruel mean streak in all of us. Lashing out what we ourselves had been denied having. Watching others suffer for the sake of your personal religion. Perhaps just relishing our own act of rebellion against the freer, happier world.
