KTM needs to fast-track basic improvements to ETS

The Electronic Train System (ETS) has been operational for several months. As a frequent traveller between Ipoh and Sungai Buloh, I observe that KTM needs to address several issues immediately while waiting for more electric routes to Johor Bharu and Padang Besar to become available.

1. Mitigate empty seats especially on weekdays and sometimes weekends to stop further financial ramifications for operating both services. This can be done by consolidating shuttle (second class) trains and ETS. The non-electric coaches could be deployed for other non-electric routes.

2. As for economy class, KTM should maintain this legacy. Since there are no different classes in ETS, the economy class should be treated like a discount for early birds on the basis of first come first served.

3. Tickets for ETS should not only be available for purchase at select stations (where it stops) but all stations. This would ensure the cost of buying tickets is not high. Implement packages like monthly passes for frequent travellers to reduce the hassle of ticketing.

4. Partner with travel agencies to have travel promotions whereby pickups can be arranged at the train station to a final destination. Just running repeated videos on places to visit in its coaches is not enough, it's more like a half-cooked product.

5. For the long term, the significant drop in train speed while in Selangor (that is, between Tanjung Malim and Rawang) has to be remedied.
