Safe at work, to work safely
Yes! Lee Lam Thye is so right about his concern on safety at the workplace, as reported in the print media, newspapers and over the TV and radio umpteen times and relentlessly over the years.
His good work and liaison with those involved has enabled Lee to indeed help reduce the number of accidents in the workplace.
Kudos to Lee for a job well done! However, do keep up the good work.
In my two-sen-worth opinion, I reckon 'work safe' means work that is safe and less prone to accidents. And, 'work safely' is to tell workers that they should always be alert, to look out for dangers ahead, to work carefully and safely.
So, coupled with a safe job and workers working safely, chances are that accidents in the workplace are unlikely to occur. And that means under controlled conditions, around-the-clock.
Work safe means the workplace is safe and meets all safety requirements and standards and that strict rules are enforced and abided to make the job safe.
Work safely means all workers must esnure that they are extra careful and alert when at work, so that unduly accidents in the workplace can be avoided, or at the least kept to the minimum.
To see that the above is implemented, the relevant local council enforcement officers should check out workplaces more frequently at random and, of course, without notice to all parties.
If anyone is caught red-handed infringing the laws, rules or regulations he or she should be pulled up and given a fine on the spot, with a month's jail sentence. Likewise, the employer or company too should be punished in the same way and with a stop-work order for the month.
Nevertheless, most important during this period of time is for all the workers, including personnel at management level, to be given a proper safety training and necessary awareness exercises.
The company should also do the needful to make the workplace 100 percent safe. And, before work can be resumed, it should get a release letter from the relevant local council head stating that the stop work order has been revoked or withdrawn.
