Violence at ceramah getting out of hand
Gerakan fully endorses the decision of the Ministry of Home Affairs that all ceramah (political talks) without police permits will not be allowed. This policy has to be implemented immediately before things get out of hand, as shown during recent unpleasant incidents that occured during PAS ceramahs in Kedah.
Things have reached a stage where certain parties have completely no regard for the law, and in view of such defiance, the government has no choice but to come down hard against perpetrators of violence.
The fact that some of the participants came prepared with stones and acid is clear proof that they already had ill intentions, and had no qualms about causing injury and mayhem. Strict police action is needed to apprehend the guilty. They should put them away for a long time to teach them a lesson.
The public should now realise the existence of dangerous and militant elements within some opposition groups who, in trying to spread their warped ideology, will stop at nothing to achieve their ends. They have to condemn, and candidates representing them in elections should be rejected.
In connection with this, we request that high priority be given to allocate sufficient resources and funds to law enforcement agencies in order to preserve the law and order situation of the nation.
Better salary schemes and service conditions, which remain relatively unattractive at present, are imperative. Moves to recruit more police personnel, particularly to serve in the Field Force and Reserve Unit would be a wise investment for the future stability of the country. In fact, other things may have to wait.
During these troubled times, when terrorism and extremism are on the rise both locally and internationally, it is only strict and uncompromising enforcement that can save the day and keep the nation safe and trouble-free.
Doing so will ensure political stability, and enhance much-needed revenue from foreign investment and tourism.
