Are we asking for too much to be treated and respected as a thinking adult? I can't tell David Chong, ( More important things than sex

, Feb 18) how to run his life or how to run the lives of his three daughters, but I know that I want to run my own life. I would like to exercise my right to choose for myself what I see and how I process the information.

I wanted to see The Vagina Monologues because I had seen the preview and it was very good. However, the self-righteous in our society decided that I we, inhibited, conservative, coy Asians are not like those outrageous, liberal, debauched Westerners when clearly there are inhibited, conservative Westerners just as there are outrageous, liberal Asians.

I do not see the point of this Asian-Western myth apart from the fact that it is a convenient tool with which to make Asian women feel guilty about articulating their needs and desires.

As one (Malaysian) speaker put it "there is no Eastern-style rape and Western-style rape" so why do we pretend and speak as though that the lives of women are worlds apart?" I could not agree more with the speaker.

I am heartened that David also finds the Internal Security Act a dreadfully oppressive law and hope that he has, as many of us have, joined the campaign for its abolition. I also hope that he will recognise, respect and defend my right to choose for myself and agree that the banning of The Vagina Monologues has denied me that right.
