I am relieved to learn from your report that Dr Farish A Noor had expressed regret that his comments on Prophet Muhammad had been taken out of context and unwittingly caused distress to some Muslims.

Much has been said about the PUM actions against several writers. I think it at least reminds writers, modernists or traditionalists that some lines have to be carefully crossed in any debate, because of special religious significance of these matters.

Thus there is an element of political correctness which should normally be observed.

It is also very regretful that Dr Patricia's name has been included for complaint by PUM upon a mistake. This was pointed out by Dr Martinez's in her letter in malaysiakini and from Dr Mazeni Alwi's article (PUM's quixotic struggle).

I think an apology is in order from PUM. It is the decent thing to do. The publication of this mistake and false allegation may have cost Dr Martinez professional embarassment.
