I refer to the NUBE split may affect MTUC elections (Feb 25) article. Perhaps it may well be the case but the consideration of block voting is still a very perturbing concern.

Does this mean that all general council union members are now required or obligated to follow the leaders? Why is it so? Why should a council member, whom by virtue of his leadership position, weigh the right and wrong but only to find that he has really no say in the matter at all?

This practice needs some serious study because at the end of the day, it is the grassroots who suffer. What we all need are responsible leaders who can perform their duties well and who are there to protect the employees as and when needed. It does not matter whether it is Ms A or Mr B, but what is required is to get the job done well.

Those who exploit the trade union movement for personal gains should be eliminated. Those elected to office should see their post as a noble service to humankind. It is delightful to note there are still a small group of people who contribute their knowledge and work for the betterment of a trade union for the mere satisfaction of just wanting to help others.

These are people whom the organisation needs as they could also lead the trade union struggle to a more innovative and creative era. This could give the country a new dimension and pave the way for a progressive and prosperous future.

Those who want to serve the union must be sincere and stop the in-fighting immediately or all will end up as losers eventually.

Membership confidence should be restored and fresh mandates should hopefully take the unions to new heights.
