The National Union of the Teaching Profession's (NUTP) concern for the welfare of her members, the teaching fraternity and the country is on record — excellent. We have championed professional issues like the decline of the English language, extended single-session schools, students indiscipline and the new curriculum.

The current dispute over the segregation issue has once again brought NUTP into the limelight. We are not championing any racial cause but the unity of our beloved country.

The former secretary-general's attack on Siva is uncalled for and callous because of all persons, he should know how NUTP functions.

If at all, he should have asked all the current office bearers of NUTP to resign as the decision made was collective. As a former leader, he should render help to the union in times of crisis, not demand for the resignation of only one person.

In all fairness, NUTP has yet to be given a copy of the said report. Is there anything to hide? As a professional body, we cannot act on what is hearsay. Give us a chance and we will respond in due time.
