The military modernisation exercise is not necessary at all unless we plan to attack other countries and we have hostile neighbours or enemies on the ready to zoom in on us.

The real threat to our country is from within. Murders, armed robberies, rapes, thefts and other crimes are not only the bigger threats to our citizens but also tarnish our countrys reputation.

The money that will be spent on armed purchase should instead be channeled to law enforcement agencies in the country such as the police. The Malaysian police salary scheme should be upgraded. This may help to reduce corruption and improve their efficiency at work.

Use the money to improve the police force's logistics. Replace all the old typewriters still in use in all police stations, district headquarters, contingent headquarters and Bukit Aman with computers. Upgrade all the lock-ups so that prisoners will not find it so easy to escape.

Provide better vehicles and other equipment. If possible, the force's strength should also be increased. More attractive salaries will attract better qualified people with higher aspirations to do their job well. Invest in the best training programme for the force.

The government owes it to the people to provide better security and not ignore the severity of the crime rate in the country.

If our government employs more diplomacy in their dealings with others, we will not have any enemies. Then we need not consider so much in strengthening our defence, but just have to maintain our guard and monitor the situation.
