Though I live in United Kingdom, I consistently follow up on the development in my home country, Malaysia, and Penang, in particular, since I was born there.

I am truly disappointed with the attitude of some minority Penangites towards development. Compared with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Penang's development, especially of its infrastructure, was almost zero. Most of the roads are the same ones since 40 years ago.

Finally, there is a good plan — the Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR). It's been long awaited by folks who have to use Jalan Jelutong or Jalan Masjid Negeri and face massive traffic jam every day going to and back from work.

There is no development without some sacrifices, of course. There will be environmental and compensation issues which the state government has to deal with. But urging

the government to halt such an important project is absolutely ridiculous and this would betray the majority of Penangites who want the PORR to go ahead.

I still remember almost no one criticised the government when they cut through mountains to build highways in Kuala Lumpur. It's time the minority Penangites stop objecting to the PORR and support the long delayed project.
