The finding in Selayang that the Malaysian Royal Police (PDRM) are corrupt

, is but a confirmation of what ordinary Malaysians and the opposition parties have been talking about for years.

Nevertheless, the workers and funder of the survey must be commended for their brave effort. Malaysians must demand answer and accountability from the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

How can a corrupt police force be entrusted to enforce genuine national security and the use of the power of detention without trial under the Internal Security Act (ISA)? What mechanisms are there to ensure that the police do not use the power to protect its own vested interests in the political status quo which allows many of its members to suck the nation and people dry, both materially and morally?

For example, if an opposition party were to hold a peaceful meeting in Selayang to expose corruption in the police force, would the party get a police permit by the OCPD in that police district?

It is not far-fetched to speculate that the police blow the threat of terrorism out of proportion in order to divert the attention of the people and the world from its internal corruption, inefficiency and incompetence (like the mismanagement of the Petaling Jaya Selatan clashes and Ops Warta II).

Maybe it is time for the Malaysian Armed Forces to take over the entire task of fighting terrorism, so that the performance and integrity of the police can be evaluated more objectively by the people.

It is time for Inspector-General of Police Norian Mai to shape up or ship out. He has been proven to be an utter failure.
