Little hopes dashed by flip-flop education policies
The writer of the letter, Four education ministers and a national mess
, has spurred a silent mother to air her frustration over the many sudden changes in our education system. When the previous education minister introduced the PTS (Penilaian Tahap Satu) which allowed bright students to skip Standard Four, two of my children managed to pass the exam and were promoted to Standard Five. My third child was looking forward to an equal chance to sit for the exam but the PTS exam was scrapped soon after the 'revolving door' took in a new education minister.
When she first heard the news from the radio, she broke up crying in tears, "Just not fair!" She was of course thinking about her two older siblings who were given the opportunity to skip a grade but not in her case.
Being a mere nine-year-old, it was of course difficult to make her understand the politics of education that every new face in our Education Ministry comes with a grandiose visions that turn out to be a new mess.
