Despite my heavy schedule, I'm really pressed to write against the incessant attacks on Tamil schools, especially in a letter by N S Khera in the New Straits Times on June 10, 2002.

I find N S Khera's advice on Tamil schools very 'unintelligent'. I wish to ask him what are his contribution to society? After all, N S Khera, you are just another retired school teacher. How much do you know about business or economic values?

You are not in the position to talk about the economic values of Tamil education. Do open up the history books and learn about how Indians were great traders and great financiers. They didn't go to Chinese schools to learn economic or business values. On the other hand, Chinese schools didn't create successful Chinese businessmen, but the Chinese businessmen are the ones who created successful Chinese schools.

One thing we must remember is that, many people love to improvise on their speaking and argumentative skills, but very few indulge in action provoking activities. This is rampant in our society especially amongst the middle and upper class Indians. The result is Tamil schools being belittled by people like N S Khera.

It's a very basic principle of life that an affluent person can afford the luxury of a BMW or a Mercedes Benz and provide comfort and pleasure to their kids. Whereas, a labourer would probably afford a Proton Saga or a Proton Wira.

Conclusively, the bulk of the students in Tamil schools is from the latter group and, is hard pressed. What I'm trying to say is, the problem is not the Tamil schools, but it's the society. What people like N S Khera should do is to be innovative and try to improve the situation.

So, to N S Khera and people alike, if you can't help, at least don't hamper! You are free to write about anything but please don't molest the dignity of Tamil schools and the feelings of Tamils.
