I read with interest the letter written by K Nirmalah on Tamil schools. I am one of those interested in the Tamil language and hence Tamil schools.

In 1980s the performance of the students from Tamil schools was indeed poor. A one day work shop was held for all the heads of Tamil schools in Perak. The state education director delivered the keynote address.

Special evening classes were arranged in some of the schools. Despite all these efforts, no improvement was shown.

Who is to be blamed for the poor performance of Tamil schools?

The students, their backgrounds, their parents? To what extent is economic condition responsible and how dedicated are the teachers?

It would be an interesting survey to find out how many of the Tamil school heads send their children to these schools.
