Whatever theories we have about Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation, the fact remains — he has decided to call it a day.

Now is the time to take a good look at all the players in the present political lineup to determine who have the charisma or ability to lead the country for a better tomorrow. Sadly, there aren't many choices for easy picking.

Perhaps, Pak Lah through his own "open and transparent style" can initiate it by allowing the Umno delegates to elect/choose the party leadership after years of "political compromise" and "no challenge directives".

However, it must be pointed out too that looking at the present set of leaders on parade — just no one else can hold a candle to Mahathir's achievements of 21 years.

However, there is no shame to invite capable senior Umno leaders of old to come forward to assist at this time of uncertainty.

I can think of two prominent names that will offer much certainty and still command much respect locally and abroad: former deputy prime minister Musa Hitam and of course, well respected and tested former finance minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah or Ku Li as he is affectionately known.

Perhaps, this is the real test of the present Umno leadership — whether they love themselves more or the nation and party.

Whatever their choice is, it will affect all of us in Malaysia.

If the wrong choice is made — history will not be so kind to the decision makers' memoirs. Trust me.
