Dr M not like Turkeys Kamal Ataturk
I wish to comment on Chan Kai Poh's letter Writing on wall: Hudud for all . I protest the suggestion that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should emulate Kamal Ataturk, who was known as the father of modern Turkey by aggressively protecting the secular nature of the constitution and ensuring the continuation of separation of religion from state.
There are many Muslims who put Kamal Ataturk in the same boat as Salman Rushdie.
How exactly has Turkey benefited from their forced secularisation to the extent that when the 'Islamists' finally gained power fairly through elections, they were jailed in order to preserve the secular constitution?
Has this secularisation brought financial success to Turkey? Why then are there 2.4 million legal Turkish immigrants in Germany, not counting the illegal ones?
The unemployment figure in Turkey is three million while more than half of those employed live on subsistence wages. It has already received a US$15.5 billion aid from the IMF and World Bank, yet another US$16 billion have just been approved by the organisations to help Turkey's ailing economy that is now on par with those of Indonesia and Argentina.
I also disagree with the comment that hudud law will cause Malaysians to be "spending their lives like pages from the 1001 Arabian Nights ". The appalling situation of Muslims in the 1001 Arabian Nights was caused by Caliphs who were more interested in building grand palaces for themselves and indulging in harems.
Corruption and nepotism were rampant while the judiciary only served as a tool for oppressing the people and to protect the Caliph and his family.
