By switching to English as the medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics, the government is not addressing the real cause of the decline in English language proficiency among students in Malaysia.

If such a switch will vastly improve English proficiency among students, then why limit to only these two subjects? Why don't we teach History, Geography and other subjects in English too?

If we analyse why the standard of English dropped so drastically among our students, it is because it was not deemed a compulsory subject to gain a pass in all our major public examinations.

To really improve the standard of English, the only right thing to do is to make it a compulsory subject . Bear in mind, this was what was done to improve the standard of Bahasa Malaysia among students in the past and it worked.

Students of various races are now proficient in Bahasa Malaysia simply because it is a compulsory subject in order to pass all our major examinations. This has nothing to do with raising racial sentiments.
