I write regarding Mustapha Ong's recent letters Right to choose one's abode of choice and No apologies for defending Dr M's way .

Mustapha Ong is perfectly entitled to live abroad. However, warnings about foreign colonists and foreign conspirators are a bit hard to swallow when they come from a person who has chosen to live in a foreign land ruled by foreigners.

Draconian laws granting capricious detention powers to a Malaysian minister would sound appealing to me too, if I didn't have to worry about Malaysian policemen arresting me under orders from a Malaysian politician.

Further, freedom of speech that "depends greatly on what was said, to whom and in what context" is essentially freedom of popular speech. Popular speech, no matter how worthless, has never been and will never be in danger.

It is the unpopular truths that needs defending, even if they are not to the liking of "sensitive" politicians.
