Kim Quek's letter Dr, M's attacks on WTO, West ignoble was an excellent read. Mahathir's speech did indeed reveal a frustrated and insecure man whose "over simplistic childish" tirade on the West did nothing but embarrass himself.

His tantrums are now his hallmark and while he may be looked upon as a hero by some, even a champion of the third world, I think he has done himself and the nation harm this time round.

Kim is quite right in pointing out China's enthusiasm in entering the World Trade Organisation. While China's admission into WTO is now forcing many inefficient state-run factories to close there are many new factories with foreign investments and machinery set up because everyone sees the potential in China.

Instead of crying foul and blaming the world and the 'Soros' everywhere, we should be working hard to make Malaysia more competitive in the global economy. Allow inefficient state-run or crony companies to close and promote good corporate governance. Do what government is supposed to do — govern.

Kim's analysis of where Malaysia can be today is also true. We have everything going for us — rich natural resources, an educated young population with (at least once upon a time) a good command of the English language, computer literacy, developed industrial infrastructure, space, and a once respected parliamentary system of governance with the proper checks and balance in place.

All for the sake of a political agenda and a handful of self-serving politicians conspiring with greedy corporate figures, the nation is far from what it really can be.

To get the country back on the right track, the leaders must be bold to accept the rule of law even when it is not self-serving. Give total independence back to the anti-corruption agency, the courts and law enforcement.

Government should stay out of business and govern so that the playing field is fair to all and equal for everyone who wishes to do business. We demand a level playing field in international business, why not here at home where the heart is?
