I write in response to the several letters written about the Malaysian Student Department in UK and would like to enlighten your readers on our functions and responsibilities.

The fact is out of the 5,000 odd students who have registered with the MSD until now, more than 3,000 of them are non-Malay Malaysian students (both sponsored and non-sponsored). We are actively reaching out to more students in the hope they will register with us.

The MSD has been providing services to non-Malay Malaysian students as well. We contributed financially and participated actively in programmes like Chinese New Year, the Mooncake festival, Deepavali, etc. We receive new non-Malay Malaysian students (whenever possible) at Heathrow and help them to reach their destinations safely.

We helped to solve the problems faced by some non-Malay Malaysian students with regard to their fees and welfare (a case in point is the plight of some 130 Indian Malaysian students studying at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen). We support the activities of the Malaysian Chinese Organisation of the UK (not a political organisation).

It is not correct and fair to accuse the MSD of not taking care of non-Malay Malaysian students here. I know that a few non-Malay Malaysian students had written to malaysiakini in support of the MSD but their letters were not considered at all by your paper to be published. Be fair, please, and give us due justice. I will be writing to other national papers on this.

Editor's note: We have double-checked our archives and there were no letters, whether from Malay or non-Malay Malaysians, which supported MSD. Should we receive such letters, we shall publish them. We also hope that other national newspapers will do the same.
