Abakjr's letter Champion the 'Malaysian' race for unity , which calls for making sacrifices in favour of a `Malaysian identity', needs to be taken with some caution! The writer's formula for a Malaysian identity is to, among others, speak Malay in school and at home.

But wait a minute...the same writer also supports the government's policy to teach Mathematics and Science in English — that means not speaking Malay in school — so what exactly is the writer saying?

I hope we don't have to sacrifice our rational thinking and all our rights as citizens, in creating a `Malaysian' identity. I guess it is this type of unthinking support for authority which stands in the way of creating a Malaysian identity, one that has no qualms about forcing 'sacrifice' from the many communities in the country.

Yet, while the government has a way of showing its force as has happened time and again, why has it not succeeded in achieving unity of all the races?

I hope that the writer can at least agree that force is not the way to do it. Remember, to apologise for 'sacrificing' English 30 years back is no 'cure' for the kind of policy blunders which can happen when one is too prone to exercise force instead of reason.
