is interesting. And the 'Overseas Chinese' subject has been discussed by a number of of economists including Kenichi Ohmae in early 1990s.

Interestingly, the overseas Chinese predicament is very similar to that of the Jews before Israel. The Jews yearned to have their promised land. But not the overseas Chinese.

I don't think the overseas Chinese will be interested at all to 'return' to China or any Chinese state. They have used to being global citizens.

Overseas Chinese know so well that not even the state will protect them. The only safety net they have is their entrepreneurial skill to survive in the global village. However, they are not willing to give up their identity and culture. Chinese culture is not that easy to wipe out.

With the rise of People's Republic of China (PRC), will they be given a more prominent political role in this region Pacific Rim? I doubt so. The rise of PRC may initially be a great help to boost their political standing in the resident countries. But the fierce competition from PRC will prove to be too much a challenge for them to handle.

I speculate there may come a time that the so-called 'bamboo network' businesses may eventually be taken over by the PRC people and the overseas Chinese will be driven to the fringe of the pacific rim. Some may even move on to the West. This is likened to the scenario of the exodus of Chinese people during the civil war in China, but this time round the war is about the dominance of cheap goods being churned out from the world's greatest workshop — PRC.
