The recent debate on polygyny, especially the monogamy campaign launched by the Coalition on Women's Rights in Islam (Cowri) has taken me by surprise, especially the shallowness in their Islamic understanding.

I totally agree with what the top religious leaders said yesterday; that the campaigners are hurting their own akidah (faith) by opposing one of the core Islamic guidelines.

The problem does not lie in the polygyny itself, but in those practising it (i.e. some are not practising it the way it should be done according to the Islamic guidelines).

I would like to urge Cowri to focus on the root of the problem (those practising polygyny, not polygyny itself).
