Mohammed Shakur managed to make his point and then miss it. It is precisely because many who practise polygyny are weak mortals and therefore do not do it according to the guidelines, that we need laws to curb their 'activities'!

I see nothing wrong with the monogamy campaign . They are promoting monogamy while at the same time acknowledging that polygyny can o­nly be carried out in highly exceptional circumstances.

In fact, I gather that other Islamic countries have extremely strict guidelines o­n polygyny, provide for marriage contracts to allow for divorce in the event of polygyny, and o­ne Muslim country even bans it. Would Mr Mohammed also accuse them of having a "shallow understanding of Islam" and "hurting their akidah "?

Mr Mohammed may want to revisit his own Islamic understanding before accusing others. I feel it will be a day of mourning and great embarrassment for Muslims when polygyny is considered o­ne of the "core of Islamic guidelines". It is the articles of faith that are the core of Islamic beliefs, and polygyny is not one of them.

Just as there are many Muslims who want to jealously guard the 'right' of men to marry more than o­ne, I know many Muslim men who are committed to monogamy with no desire to practise polygyny - I wish they too would speak up and be counted.

Unfortunately, I can imagine that they too may perhaps be simply accused of being "shallow" and "hurting their akidah " for saying so.
